South Australia and Victoria were gripped with a sweltering heatwave…record temperatures scorched the region as I jetted down to cover The Big Day Out.
Despite having lived in Oz for over six years this was infact my first BDO experience…and with a lineup including acts such as The Arctic Monkeys, Neil Young, The Prodigy, TV On The Radio…I was somewhat excited.
Arriving at the festival the mercury topped 45 degrees Celsius and punters literally baked in the sunshine.
Luckily the bands I wanted to shoot first were playing in Air conditioned hangers…I shot The Ting Tings, TV On The Radio, Black Kids, Dropkick Murphys and others in relative comfort.
It was good to finally see The Arctic Monkeys live…having listened to and dj’d their music around Sydney for a few years…and it was outstanding to get the chance to shoot Neil Young.
The final act I shot was The Prodigy. This was a really nostalgic gig for me as the last time I saw them live was back in 1995 at a festival in Scotland called T In The Park (this was also my first ever festival)…so to fast forward to 2009 and have Maxim spitting water at me and Keith Flint doing a crazy dance staring right down the barrel of my lens was fantastic.
